Pixies - Trompe le Monde

Release Date
Oct 8, 1991
The title might be French for "fool the world," but with Trompe le Monde, the Pixies weren't fooling anyone: this was essentially Black Francis' solo debut. It focuses on Francis' sci-fi fascination and lacks any Kim Deal songs; even her backing vocals are far and few between. Yet the band sounds revitalized on Trompe le Monde, as if it were planned as their last hurrah. The raucous "Distance Equals Rate Times Time" and the explosive cover of the Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On" are fairly straightforward, but the lyrics remain quirky on "Planet of Sound," a song about a Martian who lands on Earth, and "Palace of the Brine," a tribute to sea monkeys and Utah's Salt Lake. He even disses hipsters and pretentious students -- basically, the Pixies' fan base -- with nasty little digs like "Subbacultcha"'s "I was wearing eyeliner/She was wearing eyeliner" and "U-Mass"' "It's eduuucaaationaal!" Musically, "Trompe le Monde"'s psychedelic sheen and "Alec Eiffel"'s atmospheric keyboards prove that the Pixies' sound wasn't defined by Steve Albini-style rawness. There's also more emotional depth: "The Sad Punk" features the strangely poignant bridge "And evolving from the sea/Would not be too much time for me/To walk beside you in the sun," and "Letter to Memphis" is a heartfelt, if cryptic, love song. Though Trompe le Monde doesn't sound quite like the Pixies' other work, Come on Pilgrim's spooky beginnings, Surfer Rosa's abrasive assault, Doolittle's deceptively accessible punk-pop, and Bossanova's spacy sonics helped make Trompe le Monde a rousing swan song and a precursor to alternative rock's imminent success. Whether that means their music remained pure or they missed their chance to cash in is debatable; either way, the Pixies are one of America's greatest, most influential bands.

Pixies - Bossanova

When Bossanova arrived in 1990, it reflected the exhaustion the Pixies felt after Doolittle's enormous success: For the first time, the band seems to be running out of ideas. Tellingly, Kim Deal contributes no songs, having formed the Breeders to give her work an outlet; that summer, their debut Pod won a warmer response than Bossanova received. Arguably the Pixies' weakest album -- though Francis has said it's his favorite -- most of it finds the band in fine form. Gil Norton's spacious, reverb-heavy production makes the Pixies sound like a Martian bar band, which fits the cover of the Surftones' "Cecilia Ann" and the glorious, shimmering closer "Havalina" perfectly. On the theremin-driven "Velouria," science fiction imagery displaces Francis' penchant for fetishistic lyrics; next to the token kinky song "Down to the Well"'s tired sound, it's a refreshing change. The similarly cryptic "All Over the World" and alien abduction tale "The Happening" add to the sci-fi feel. Quirky pop songs like "Allison," a tribute to jazz cool-cat Mose Allison, and "Dig for Fire," Francis' self-professed Talking Heads homage, heighten Bossanova's playful, slightly off-kilter vibe, but rockers like "Hang Wire" and "Blown Away," fall flat. However, "Rock Music" is one of the group's most fiery outbursts, and "Is She Weird"'s chugging grind and sexy, funny lyrics make it a classic Pixies song. The band was so consistently amazing on their previous albums that when they released a slightly weaker one, critics and fans alike judged them too harshly. But on Bossanova's strongest moments, the Pixies explored their softer side and found different uses for their extreme dynamics. Like a straight-A student who suddenly receives a B+, Bossanova might have been a disappointment initially, but its (small) failings emphasize the strengths of the rest of the Pixies' work.

Pixies - Surfer Rosa_Come on Pilgrim (1988)

When Rough Trade reissued the Pixies' seminal full-length debut album, Surfer Rosa, on CD, they added the terrific mini-album Come on Pilgrim as a bonus. While it's nice to have these two records on one disc, the sequencing of Come on Pilgrim after Surfer Rosa is a little disconcerting, since the two albums each have distinctive sounds that clash slightly. Steve Albini's production of Surfer Rosa is metallic and spare -- it's in black and white, with no shades of grey and no color. Come on Pilgrim, on the other hand, is filled with greys and colors, and while the contrast between the two is certainly interesting, it would be more enlightening if the mini-LP was placed before Surfer Rosa. Nevertheless, some fans might like having both albums on one disc, but buying them individually is a better move and, in any case, a little more cost-effective as well.

Tanya Donelly - Lovesongs For Underdogs

Release Date
Sep 9, 1997
Tanya Donelly's artistic sensibilities were at the very core of Belly, which is why it was a bit of a surprise when she suddenly disbanded the group after its second album flopped. Upon listening to her 1997 debut, Lovesongs for Underdogs, it becomes clear that Belly wasn't suited for these songs. Lovesongs for Underdogs is a pretty, pleasant collection of pop-folk songs; Belly would have overwhelmed these songs, delivering them with too much backbeat. Instead of giving these simple songs clean, clear arrangements, though, Donelly polished everything on the album to a shine, and in the process, she sapped the soul of much of the record. Everything on Lovesongs for Underdogs tends to blend together, and while there are some nice moments scattered throughout the record, nothing makes itself known.

Stereo Total - Do The Bambi

Release Date
Jan 25, 2005
Stereo Total return to their cheap 'n' cheerful roots on Do the Bambi, making it their most consistent set of songs since 1999's My Melody. 2001's Musique Automatique had almost as many not-quite-there moments as it did brilliant examples of the group's synth pop-rock sass; this album might not be quite as ambitious, what Do the Bambi lacks in scope it more than makes up for in quality. "Babystrich"'s stylishly quirky synth pop, the sweet duet "Das Erste Mal" and "Les Lapins" are all quintessential Stereo Total, as are "Europa Neurotisch"'s sophisticated bounce and the charmingly off-kilter "Partymadchen Gefoltert" ("Tortured Party Girl"), which lives up to its name. Do the Bambi's spare production works especially well on the coyly bittersweet title track and "Helft Mir," but also suits punchier songs like "Hungry!" and the robotic synth pop of "Troglodyten." Stereo Total's love of film plays a major part on Do the Bambi, most obviously on "Cinemania," a cute who's-who that name-checks everyone from Woody Allen to Sophia Loren, and "Orange Mecanique," a clever and affectionate homage to Wendy Carlos' soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange. More abstractly, they also pay tribute to Jean-Luc Godard's classic Weekend with two fittingly witty, satirical tracks, "Vive le Week-End" and "Tas de Tole." The group's political side also comes to the fore on "La Douce Humanite," which rails against violence and cruelty, but in a typically catchy and clever way. As usual, Francoise Cactus and Brezel Goring include plenty of smart nods to pop history, from the "My Sharona"-like bassline on "Cannibale" to the twangy, Bruce Haack-esque synths on the cover of Nico's "Chelsea Girls." Do the Bambi isn't a radical change from Stereo Total's previous work, but it is completely enjoyable from start to finish.

The Stooges - The Stooges

For their first album, The Stooges had intended to record five songs: "I Wanna Be Your Dog", "No Fun", "1969", "Ann", and "We Will Fall". The five songs were staples of—and essentially the basis of—The Stooges' live set at the time. A typical Stooges song of the period would involve two minutes of composed song followed by several minutes of improvisation. Presuming that the five songs as normally performed would cover requirements for the album, the Stooges were told by Elektra that they needed more material. According to Iggy Pop, "We handed (the five-song version of the album) in and they refused it. They said, 'There aren't enough songs!' So we lied and said, 'That's OK, we've got lots more songs.'" (liner notes of 2005 reissue, p.9)
In reality, the Stooges were about a day ahead of themselves when Iggy made that statement to Elektra; overnight, the group wrote three more songs, "Real Cool Time", "Not Right", and "Little Doll", and played them for the first time in the studio.
An initial mix by producer John Cale that resembled fellow ex-Velvet Underground member Lou Reed's "closet mix" of their third album (ironically, Cale had quit the Velvets before that album was recorded) was rejected by Elektra. The mix as heard on the album was done by Iggy Pop and Elektra Records president Jac Holzman. Four of Cale's original mixes, and the full studio versions of "Ann" and "Not Right", appear on the bonus disc of the 2005 reissued version.
In 2003, the album was ranked number 185 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.
In March 2005, Q magazine placed "I Wanna Be Your Dog" at number 13 in its list of the 100 Greatest Guitar Tracks.

AC/DC - Stiff Upper Lip

Stiff Upper Lip, AC/DC's 15th studio album, may not reach the heights of Back in Black or Highway to Hell, but it delivers strongly and satisfyingly. It's the record that the highly touted, Rick Rubin-produced Ballbreaker should have been: a simple, addictive, hard album, bursting with bold riffs and bolstered by a crunching, thrillingly visceral sound. Sure, there are absolutely no new ideas, but that's the point. AC/DC know their strengths and they embrace them. And why shouldn't they? Nobody writes a better riff than Malcolm and Angus Young; each song has a riff so catchy, it feels like you've heard it for years. Is there anything earth-shaking? Hardly, but it's largely terrific nonetheless, just because AC/DC are so good at what they do. It's simple music, to be sure, but it's unassumingly musical and, in a way rather smart. If making music like this was really that easy, why can't anybody else do it this well? Some bands are capable of knocking out one record like this -- one, maybe two. AC/DC do it nearly every time out. They've never really stretched, yet that's why they have one of the most reliable catalogs in rock & roll. When you put on one of their records, you know what you're in for, and they always deliver. With Stiff Upper Lip, they're not at classic status, but they're still top-notch. This may not be the first AC/DC record for a collection, but once you're into their scene, it's a fine place to be.

Stereo Total - Paris Berlin

Berlin-based Stereo Total-- who apparently find the "<->" construction to their liking-- have committed a little something called Paris <-> Berlin to tape, the proper follow up to their 2005 release Do the Bambi.

We're guessing the title is a riff on the synthy, kitschy band's Franco-German roots, or, perhaps, a perplexing way to offer directions between the two locales. The album will hit Europe June 22 from Disko B, with a U.S. release August 21 courtesy of Kill Rock Stars.

Amadou & Mariam - Dimanche a Bamako (2005)

Having issued a handful of excellent Afro-rock albums on small independent labels in the last few years, which have attracted attention within the world music community, Amadou and Miriam are poised to break out with Dimanche A Bamako, arguably the best album of a career that goes back 30 years. Produced by mischievous French/Spanish pop star Manu Chao (who even co-wrote and sings on a few tunes), the album fuses the couple's dynamic grooves with the producer's signature everything-and-the-kitchen sink backgrounds. This is truly a collaboration of like-minded individuals: Chao's own rabid multi-culti mix of styles enhances the blind couple's guitar-driven mix of blues-rock and African percussion, as well as Latin, dance and reggae grooves. Highlights include the impossibly catchy "Senegal Fast Food" and the percolating "Coulibaly," while the couple's political bent comes out on "Politic Amagni." Truly an album with a global perspective, there is something for everyone here, and rather than diluting the stew, it makes it all the more tasty.

Feist - Let It Die

Somewhere in between living with Peaches, playing guitar with By Divine Right, rapping with Chilly Gonzales, and singing with Broken Social Scene and Apostle of Hustle, Canadian songstress Feist started a solo career. Following up 1999's self-released Monarch, Let It Die was recorded in Paris between 2002 and 2003. The romance of the City of Lights glows throughout as a combination of folk, bossa nova, jazz-pop, and indie rock finds its place among the 11-track song list. She'll woo you with her sultry vocals throughout, a delicate and sweet voice that feels cozy. From the warm shimmy and shake of "Gatekeeper" and "Mushaboom" to the classy R&B grooves of "One Evening" and "Leisure Suite," Feist explores various musical worlds without getting lost. She reels you into different soundscapes and it's an exciting adventure. Dare yourself to imagine Patrice Rushen, Ivy's Dominique Durand, and Astrud Gilberto in a group, and that's basically the beginning threads of Let It Die. Feist never holds back sonically or musically; however, Let It Die isn't an extravagant first album. She's playful with her design and the overall composition flows nicely. Feist has varied styles and sounds just right, and that's what makes Let It Die the secret treasure that it is. Her rendition of Ron Sexsmith's "Secret Heart" is a cinematic outing for a dewy spring day. The Bee Gees' "Inside and Out" gets a foxy makeover for what is probably the album's finest moment. Feist's soft touch makes magic on these particular covers, and the bittersweet loveliness of Blossom Dearie's "Now at Last" ties it all together to make Let It Die a storybook romance.

Frank Sinatra - Duets

A tremendous commercial success upon its release in 1993, this collection pairs Sinatra with various big name vocalists on 13 of his best-known classics. Unfortunately, it's also one of the least enjoyable records of Sinatra's career. Part of the problem is Phil Ramone's obtrusively slick production, but the fact that Sinatra's partners sang along to tapes of his already-recorded performances--rather than with the Chairman himself--really keeps Duets from ever catching fire. Tony Bennett turns in a predictably swell "New York, New York," but duets with Gloria Estefan ("Come Rain or Come Shine"), Kenny G ("All the Way/One More for My Baby") and U2's Bono ("I've Got You Under My Skin") unfortunately represent something of an artistic low-point for Sinatra

AC/DC - Back in Black

Back in Black is the seventh studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, released on 25 July 1980. Back in Black was the first AC/DC album recorded without former lead singer Bon Scott, who had died in February 1980. The band considered disbanding following Scott's death, but ultimately decided to continue and shortly thereafter hired Brian Johnson as their new lead singer and lyricist. Though the Young brothers had begun work on this album prior to Scott's death, and Scott had written lyrics for potential new songs, the decision was made to redo the album from scratch upon hiring Johnson.[1] Robert John "Mutt" Lange, who had previously worked with AC/DC on Highway to Hell, was again brought in to produce.

The album was remastered and re-released first in late 1994, then again in the Bonfire box set in 1997, and as part of the AC/DC Remasters Series in 2003. In addition, a Dualdisc version was released in 2005, featuring the album in enhanced LPCM Stereo format and the video documentary The Story of Back in Black.

The international sales of the disc ascend to more than 42 million copies, making it the second most sold disc of all time behind Thriller by Michael Jackson.

Muzika, tekst i vokal Tonci Pajkin.

04.FLEKE: "Slatka mala"

05.IMPERIUM OF JAZZ: "Japanska stvar"
Rani snimak kasnije dugovecnog novosadskog klupskog benda.

06.KARLOWY VARY: "Ratnici"
Zagrebacki bend sa uzbudljivim Varjinim vokalom i idejnim vodjom, Tomom In der Muhlenom (pseudonim). Psihodelicna atmosfera, odlicna rok podloga i isto takva produkcija iz studija "STS". Debitovali na Demo topu i na trecem albumu "Ventilatora", 1985. Kasnije radili i samostalne LP projekte.

07.KONJAK: "Ona i ja"

09.REX ILUSIVII: "Arabia"
Tekst i vokal Igor Popovic (tada frontmen grupe "Djakarta"), gitara Tomo In der Muhlen (Karlowy Vary), marimba Firci i saksofon Dese Molnar.

10.SAYONARA: "Neka draga lica"
Snimak nacinjen u studiju XIII Radio Beograda. "Sayonara" su bili Dejan Djakovac (muzika, tekst, sintisajzeri) i Nebojsa Bogojevic (vokal). Divno je setiti ih se kroz ovu nostalgicnu pesmu, koja je bila i na Demo topu i na trecem albumu "Ventilatora" iz 1985. godine.

11.S.T.R.A.H.: "Nocas"

Bryan Ferry - Dylanesque

Bryan Ferry - Dylanesque

The greatest -- indeed, only -- irony of Bryan Ferry's 2007 album-long tribute to the Bard is that Dylanesque never sounds "Dylanesque." There are no solo acoustic guitars, no swirling organs, no thin wild mercury music, nothing that suggests any of the sounds typically associated with Bob Dylan. No, Dylanesque sounds Ferry-esque: careful, precise, elegant, so casually sophisticated it sometimes borders on the drowsy. There are no new wrinkles, then, apart from a small but crucial one -- unlike his other records, this was recorded quickly, over the course of a week with his touring band in tow. This does give Dylanesque a comparatively loose, off-the-cuff feel, which is a bit of a welcome relief after several decades of cautious, deliberate conceptual albums, and gives the album its understated charm. Since Ferry never radically reinvents the songs -- apart from the sleek, sly propulsion of "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and a spare, haunting piano-and-strings version of "Positively Fourth Street" -- this is an album where all the pleasures lay in the subtleties, whether it's how Ferry phrases his delivery, how his road band feels supple yet muscular, how Eno electronically enhances a few tracks or how Robin Trower tears into "All Along the Watchtower." These are the details to savor upon repeated listens, but upon that first spin it's immediately apparent that the Ferry who made Dylanesque is an assured, relaxed vocalist who isn't sweating the specifics, he's simply singing songs with a band that offers sympathetic support. They may not push him, the way that Roxy did in its prime, nor does this have the meticulous ambition of his original work, but again, that's the charm of this album: Ferry has never felt quite so comfortable as he does here, and if that may not be exactly what all listeners are looking for when they listen to his work, this is the quality that will make Dylanesque a small understated gem for certain segments of his die-hard fans.

Track list:
01.Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues
02.Simple Twist Of Fate
03.Make You Feel My Love
04.The Times They Are A-Changin'
05.All I Really Wanna Do
06.Knocking On Heaven's Door
07.Positively 4th Street
08.If Not For You
09.Baby, Let Me Follow You Down

Frank Sinatra - Strangers in The Night

Recording Date
Apr 11, 1966-Apr 16, 1966

Strangers in the Night marked Frank Sinatra's return to the top of the pop charts in the mid-'60s, and it consolidated the comeback he started in 1965. Although he later claimed he disliked the title track, the album was an inventive, rich effort from Sinatra, one that established him as a still-viable star to a wide, mainstream audience without losing the core of his sound. Combining pop hits ("Downtown," "On a Clear Day (You Can See Forever)," "Call Me") with show tunes and standards, the album creates a delicate but comfortable balance between big band and pop instrumentation. Using strings, horns, and an organ, Riddle constructed an easy, deceptively swinging sound that appealed to both Sinatra's dedicated fans and pop radio. And Sinatra's singing is relaxed, confident, and surprisingly jazzy, as he plays with the melody of "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" and delivers a knockout punch with the assured, breathtaking "Summer Wind." Although he would not record another album with Riddle again, Sinatra would expand the approach of Strangers in the Night for the rest of the decade.

Track list:

All or Nothing at All
Call Me
You're Driving Me Crazy!

Kaiser Chiefs - Yours Truly Angry Mob

It's no secret that the Leeds-based Kaiser Chiefs love the Jam. The band's 2005 excellent but uneven debut Employment was an infectious salute to all things mod and Brit-pop, boasting three solid singles ("I Predict a Riot," "Oh My God" and "Everyday I Love You Less and Less") that held great promise for future endeavors. On Yours Truly, Angry Mob, the group takes a little more time in establishing its pop acumen, offering no immediate pay-offs despite its insatiable thirst for FM melody. Opener and first single "Ruby," a rowdy, mid-tempo singalong that gets everything right but feels a little tossed-off and disposable, is indicative of Angry Mob's first half -- "Heat Dies Down," "Love's Not a Competition (But I'm Winning)" and "Highroyds" have all of their cogs well-oiled and reliably dressed, but there's nothing here that warrants the inevitable second listen in which a perfectly constructed pop song's true genius is revealed. To that end, Angry Mob is creatively back loaded (though not genius), relying on a series of rewarding and occasionally subversive tracks like "I Can Do It Without You," "Learnt My Lesson Well," "My Kind of Guy" and closer "Retirement" to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump, revealing a band that is likely to continue pumping out albums with a few great songs on them until the requisite "Greatest Hits" collection arrives.

Read: Interpreting Bjork

Read: is a combined label sampler/tribute album from the Portland-based imprint Hush. These interpretations are tasteful, almost reverent -- even when the arrangements are modified, there's consideration for that particular "Björkness," that sly detachment her work is usually steeped in. So Kaitlyn Ni Donovan hesitates over each line in "Hunter" like she's creeping up on her prey. Ben Gibbard's "Joga" is more conventionally indie, his whisper resting lightly on the plucked acoustic strings. The Decemberists get all indie with "Human Behavior," too, but there's a sardonic quality in the vocal that ably matches the rhythm track's spot-on slink. Hush's quirky Noise for Pretend is probably one of the only groups that can handle "It's Oh So Quiet" without getting all excited and hyper and blowing the whole thing. Noise proves this with a version that wraps understated instrumentation around Esperanza Spalding's vocal for a truly luminous reinterpretation. Other Read: highlights include Corrina Repp's stark "You've Been Flirting Again" and a shuffling turntablist take on "Possibly Maybe" from Roots of Orchis.

Centro-Matic - Fort Recovery

Centro-Matic's Fort Recovery is what the magic hour -- that time just before the sun goes down when everything looks burnished and beautiful, but also a little sad -- would sound like if it were turned into music. Every song, from rousing rockers like "For New Starts" and "Take a Rake" to "Covered Up in Mines" and "I See Through You," positively radiates a bittersweet warmth. Over the band's decade-long existence, Centro-Matic's Will Johnson has built a reputation for being a wry, evocative writer, and titles like "The Refugees Have Won" and lyrics like "Patience for the Ride"'s "you can't touch the forces of our hurricane hearts" are a welcome reminder of why that is. Indeed, the main thing that's changed over the band's career is the sound quality of their albums. They've gone from below bare-bones recordings to detailed productions like the one that graces Fort Recovery. Centro-Matic sounds equally good in either setting, but the interesting drum sounds on "Take the Maps and Run" and the electronic flourishes sprinkled throughout the album make the most of the album's polish. They also make the most of staying in that fuzzy area between alt-country and indie rock; while that's not a particularly big territory, they've mastered it. With Centro-Matic, more of the same is definitely a good thing, and Fort Recovery shows that they just keep getting better at what they're doing.

The Stooges - The Weirdness

The Weirdness is the fourth studio album - and first formal non-live release since 1973's Raw Power - by influental protopunk band The Stooges, featuring founding members Iggy Pop, Ron Asheton, and Scott Asheton along with new bassist Mike Watt (Minutemen/fIREHOSE) and Fun House saxophonist Steve Mackay.

The album was recorded by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago, Illinois during October 2006, and was mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London, England in December of that same year. A day by day recording diary was being posted by Mike Watt at his website, but was mysteriously deleted from the site at some point. The album was referred to as Secret Plan by Watt in the diary.

According to Watt's online diary, the songs recorded during the sessions included a finalized version of "My Idea Of Fun" (first heard on the live CD Telluric Chaos) and a cover version of The Beatles' "I Wanna Be Your Man", while a November 20 article on the album, derived mainly from an interview with Pop, also gives the following song titles as appearing on the album: "Trollin'", "ATM", "You Can't Have Friends,", "The Weirdness" and "Greedy Awful People." Further titles were announced in December after the album was mastered, and the final track listing was announced by Virgin Records on January 30, 2007.

The Byrds - Sweetheart of the Rodeo

The Byrds' Sweetheart of the Rodeo was not the first important country-rock album (Gram Parsons managed that feat with The International Submarine Band's debut Safe at Home), and The Byrds were hardly strangers to country music, dipping their toes in the twangy stuff as early as their second album. But no major band had gone so deep into the sound and feeling of classic country (without parody or condescension) as the Byrds did on Sweetheart; at a time when most rock fans viewed country as a musical "L'il Abner" routine, the Byrds dared to declare that C&W could be hip, cool, and heartfelt. Though Gram Parsons had joined the band as a pianist and lead guitarist, his deep love of C&W soon took hold, and Roger McGuinn and Chris Hillman followed his lead; significantly, the only two original songs on the album were both written by Parsons (the achingly beautiful "Hickory Wind" and "One Hundred Years from Now"), while on the rest of the set classic tunes by Merle Haggard, the Louvin Brothers, and Woody Guthrie were sandwiched between a pair of twanged-up Bob Dylan compositions. While many cite this as more of a Gram Parsons album than a Byrds set, given the strong country influence of McGuinn and Hillman's later work, it's obvious Parsons didn't impose a style upon this band so much as he tapped into a sound that was already there, waiting to be released. If the Byrds didn't do country-rock first, they did it brilliantly, and few albums in the style are as beautiful and emotionally affecting as this. [Columbia's 1997 CD reissue of the album improves on the masterpiece by adding eight strong bonus tracks, including four cuts with Gram Parsons singing lead trimmed from the original release for legal reasons.]

2. I Am A Pilgrim

Cosmic American is a collection of demos made in various homes and hotel rooms in 1972. In an informal, sing-a-long environment, Parsons works through embryonic versions of songs and old favorites with friends Emmylou Harris, Barry Tashian, and Ric Grech (among others) -- several songs never making to the studio. Though the quality of the recordings can be off-putting to the casual fan, those who count themselves among GP's ever-growing cult will find this intimate look a compulsive listen.

Personnel: Mike Campbell , Jonny Polonsky, Matt Sweeney, Pat McLaughlin, Randy Scruggs, Smokey Hormel (guitar); Benmont Tench (piano, harpsichord, organ). Additional personnel include: Mark Howard , Marty Stuart, Pete Wade. Recording information: Cash Cabin Studio, Hendersonville, Tennessee. Johnny Cash's final album, AMERICAN V: A HUNDRED HIGHWAYS, is a moving and fitting swan song for the legendary performer. Like Cash's other recordings with producer Rick Rubin, AMERICAN V is quiet, intense, and minimal; it creates a thrilling intimacy by keeping the focus on Cash's aging voice and increasingly soulful, nuanced phrasing. The album was produced piecemeal, with Cash's vocal tracks recorded mere months before the artist's death in 2003, and the backing tracks added two years later. Yet the album coheres remarkably well, thanks in large part to the fine musicians on hand (including ace session guitarist Smokey Hormel). But this is Cash's show through and through. Whether on covers (Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind"), originals ("Like the 309," the last song Cash ever wrote), or spirituals ("I'm Free From the Chain Gang Now," the album's stirring, heartbreakingly appropriate closer), Cash sounds like no one but himself--weary, wise, and touched, perhaps, by an unseen hand
