The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Atlanta International Pop Festival_July 3 & 5, 1970

Release Date: Oct 21, 2003
Recording Date: Jul 3, 1970-Jul 5, 1970
For the first time anywhere -- officially or not -- two (mostly) complete performances by the Allman Brothers at the Atlanta International Pop Festival over the Fourth of July weekend (they were the bookends of the fest) in 1970 have been issued with stellar sound, complete annotation and cool liner notes. The festival took place while the Allmans were in the process of recording their second album, Idlewild South, when they appeared on July 3 as the hometown openers of the entire festival and proceeded to blow the minds of over 100,000 people -- for their last set on July 5 at 3:50 a.m. they performed in front of as many as 500,000. Musically, other than a somewhat stiff version of "Statesboro Blues," the July 3 set is magical. There is a stunning version of "Dreams" lasting almost ten minutes with beautiful Hammond/guitar interplay between Gregg and Dickey. Long and ferocious versions of "Whipping Post" and "Mountain Jam" are here, but the track on the July 3 set is Berry Oakley's feral vocal read of Willie Dixon's "Hoochie Coochie Man." " A short (5:49) version of this song, it has a rock & roll immediacy that is strained out of the longer versions to gain the improvisational edge. Disc one also restores Gregg Allman's "Every Hungry Woman," to its rightful place -- previously only having been available on an anthology. Harp player Thom Doucette, no stranger to ABB fans, is here aplenty, adding his righteous, stinging harp lines to many tracks on both nights. The way Gregg's organ playing is recorded here offers a new view of just how integral an anchor he was for both guitarists to play off. He is a monster musician and, even at this early date, was showing off his improvisational and rhythmic skills.
Disc two is graced by the original live mixes of "Statesboro Blues" and "Whipping Post" that were released on First Great Rock Festivals of the Seventies and these are stunning for their intensity and focus, as well as clarity. "Don't Keep Me Wonderin'" is as tough a set opener as there is with the ringing slide guitars attacking one another and going for broke to kick things off. The long versions of "Stormy Monday" and "'Liz Reed" are among the most intimate and groundbreaking the band ever recorded, while "Whipping Post" transmutes itself into a jazz tune for a few minutes and changes everything. The nearly half-hour "Mountain Jam" is deepened here by the addition of a third guitarist: Johnny Winter sits in with the ABB and Doucette for the definitive version of this classic -- you can forget the one on Eat a Peach after this. While it won't replace Live at the Fillmore East as the greatest live record ever made, this is an essential purchase for ABB fans, one that gives us the treat of a dignified rendering of a very important and defining moment in the band's early career. It also provides an excellent, even mind-blowing introduction to a band that was at the peak of its power.

Dee Dee Warwick - She Didn't Know: The Atco Sessions [1996]

Release Date: Feb 1996
Recording Date: Apr 1, 1970-Jan 13, 1972
In the early '70s, Warwick recorded for Atco with limited success, reaching the R&B Top Ten with "She Didn't Know (She Kept on Talking)," and gaining a couple of smaller R&B hits with "Cold Night in Georgia" and a cover of "Suspicious Minds." She did quite a bit of recording for Atco between 1970 and 1972 in a fairly down-home vein, sometimes with backing by the esteemed Dixie Flyers rhythm section, and backup vocals by the Sweet Inspirations, Cissy Houston, and Judy Clay. These sessions sounded something like a poppier variation on the Stax sound, though none of the songs had the arresting qualities necessary to break her to the pop audience. This 22-track compilation of her Atco work is a typically high-class Soul Classics production, including all the hits, non-LP singles, tracks from her 1970 LP Turning Around, and seven unreleased songs that are just as impressive as her official performances from the era. Dee Dee, incidentally, sounds nothing like her famed sister Dionne here, favoring far gutsier vocals, material, and arrangements. It's good late-period vintage soul, and more evidence that Warwick was one of the more unjustly neglected soul performers of her time.

Track list:

01.She Didn't Know (She Kept on Talking)
02.More Today Than Yesterday
03.Make Love to Me

Freda Payne - Band of Gold [1970]

Although much of soul vocalist Freda Payne's early '70s association with the mighty Invictus label would be fraught with stress, her 1970 debut album, Band of Gold, was nevertheless a masterpiece of epic proportions. Touted on the sleeve as "people music, for people who like pop, rhythm and blues, ballad, hymns -- just about anything," Payne's set certainly reflects that wide range and, while the overall sonic tone of Band of Gold reflects her producers' Motown history, especially across songs like "Unhooked Generation" and the Holland-Dozier penned "The World Don't Owe You a Thing," there are other more spontaneous moments here as well. With a majority of the songs co-written by Ron Dunbar, who would go on to become part of the P-Funk empire, "Payne" wowed her audience first with the top hit "Band of Gold" before diving into "Deeper and Deeper." Both are downtempo love ballads, delivered with a maturity and richness that belies much of the balladeering of the era. Other standouts include the young love remembrances of "Through the Memory of My Mind," which allows Payne's vocals to stay fully in front and even includes a subtle Shangri-Las-y spoken work bridge and the smoky intro'd "This Girl Is a Woman Now." It must be said, however, that the title song -- truly one of the greatest soul ballads of all time -- so dominates proceedings that it is very easy to overlook these other gems, one reason why Band of Gold rarely attracts much attention today.

Track list:

01.Unhooked Generation
02.The Easiest Way To Fall
03.Band of Gold
04.I Left Some Dreams Back There
05.Deeper and Deeper

DECCA Originals _ The Girls' Scene [2000]

This installment in Decca Records archival Scene-related CDs explores the sizable contributions of the fairer sex to pop music during the 1960s. While these ladies may have made a significant impact in their native U.K., the vast majority remained virtual unknowns on other shores. The Girls' Scene (2000) contains over two-dozen cuts, representing some of the best female vocal groups of the era. Much like their Stateside colleagues, songs were often derived from veteran contemporary composers. This collection offers up distinguished reworkings from performers whose names might not be instantly recognizable, although the melodies should be. The Motown-sound is represented by "Two Lovers" from Louise Cordet, as well as Beryl Marsden's spot-on reading of "When the Lovelight Starts Shining Thru' His Eyes." The Brill Building pop scene spawned the Gerry Goffin/Carole King compositions "The Boy From Chelsea" -- sung here by Truly Smith -- an inspired take of "Hey Boy" by Barry St. John, and along with Phil Spector, Marianne Faithfull's "Is This What I Get For Loving You?" Faithfull is one of the more prominent figures to have emerged from Andrew Loog Oldham's notable stable of talent. In many ways, Oldham was the English equivalent to Spector, as both were multi-talented moguls who were best known for their work behind the scenes with others. From his coterie are Adrienne Poster and Vashti -- each respectively cover Keith Richard and Mick Jagger tunes "Shang a Doo Lang" and "Some Things Just Stick in Your Mind." Lorraine Child goes even closer to the source on the Oldham-penned "You." Olivia Newton-John is certainly a name that stands out, as does her unmistakable Aussie warble on the otherwise hard-hitting attack of Jackie DeShannon's "Till You Say You'll Be Mine." Parties interested in Girls' Scene should also note the other entries in this series, including the Rock 'N' Roll Scene (1999), Blues Scene (1999), Freakbeat Scene (1999), Psychedelic Scene (1998), and two volumes from the wonderful world of the Mod Scene (1998).

Joe Tex - From the Roots Came the Rapper [Expanded]

The first ten tracks of this CD comprised the totality of Tex's 1971 Atlantic LP From the Roots Came the Rapper. This isn't exactly a straight reissue of that record, though, since it tacks on ten additional tracks recorded in the early '70s. The era this material represents wasn't an artistic or commercial high-water mark in Tex's career, although it's OK. Like his late-'60s sides, it bridges smooth soul with funk and anticipates rap, though it's a little lusher than his slightly earlier stuff. From From the Roots Came the Rapper itself, a highlight is the epic eight-minute version of "Oh Me Oh My (I'm a Fool for You Baby)," which naturally includes some extended spoken sections. That and the similarly constructed 11-minute cover of "I'll Never Fall in Love Again" make you wonder whether there was some influence traveling back and forth between Tex and Isaac Hayes. The rest of that LP had fair, and not great, good-natured yet earthy soul with a bit more of a slick Northern production influence than his '60s records. Tex himself, surprisingly, wrote just one of the tunes, though the other writers included stalwarts Jerry Williams Jr. (aka Swamp Dogg) ("The Baby Is Mine") and Don Covay ("I Can Do It Better"). The ten additional bonus tracks appeared on early-'70s Dial singles and the LPs I Gotcha and JT Spills the Beans, with one of them ("Lesley") previously unreleased; 1975's "Under Your Powerful Love" is the only cut dating from after 1972, and its early disco feel makes it a little out of place. The early-'70s tracks are OK, characteristic soul-gospel-funk Tex. But there's a sense that he's going over ground he tilled several times before, and not with the same sense of excitement as the first or second time around. The funk-rap flavor gets tangiest on the 1972 single "King Thaddeus."

Candye Kane - Guitar'd and Feathered [2007]

Blues-rock veteran Candye Kane returns with one of her stronger albums in recent memory. The basic premise of Guitar'd and Feathered is simple enough: each track pairs the randy blues diva with a different guitarist. Guests include Sue Foley, Junior Watson, Steady Rollin' Bob Margolin (who also produces), and others, but rather than bend Kane's outsized persona to fit each guitarist's style, Kane and Margolin keep her ragged-but-right vocals front and center throughout. Highlights include the rueful Boz Scaggs-like pop-soul of "I'm My Own Worst Enemy," the Wanda Jackson-inspired rockabilly howl of "Crazy Little Thing," and a surprisingly somber acoustic blues gospel protest tune called "Jesus and Mohammed" that's entirely unlike anything Kane has ever done before and on which she recalls Judy Henske's theatrical, almost cabaret-influenced style. Many of the lyrics touch on elements of Kane's own life (based on the liner notes, it seems "I'm My Own Worst Enemy" was inspired by an online flame war) and her sexually aggressive persona, but it seems to be an older, wiser Kane on display throughout Guitar'd and Feathered, with an element of lovesickness that suits her.

Track list:

1 My Country Man
2 Back with My Old Friends
3 When I Put the Blues on You
4 I'm Not Gonna Cry Today
5 I Done Got Over It
6 Goodbye My Heart
7 I'm My Own Worst Enemy
8 Fine Brown Frame
9 I'm Lucky
10 Jesus and Mohammed
11 Club of the Foolish Hearts
12 We're Long Ago and Far Away
13 Crazy Little Thing

Candye Kane - Whole Lotta Love [2003]

Lusty persona aside, Candye Kane is a tremendous vocalist with an impressive range. Her first release on Ruf Records in 2003 includes a version of "Something's Got a Hold on Me" that would make Etta James proud (unfortunately, the backing track doesn't match her intensity), while the title track, "Whole Lotta Love," sticks real close to Led Zeppelin's version without the extended guitar solo. Guest star Charlie Musselwhite contributes two tracks; "Put It All in There" features his harp virtuosity, and on "What's That Smell" he switches to acoustic guitar and vocals. All in all, this is a fun release suitable for any Saturday night get-together.

Track list:

1 Something's Got a Hold on Me
2 Wrap Around Joy
3 Put It All in There
4 I Got a Secret
5 Fit, Fat and Fine
6 A Lion in My House
7 What's That I Smell?

Candye Kane - The Toughest Girl Alive [2000]

Candye Kane is a big-voiced blues singer with a twist. Though they are mostly credited as originals, the tunes are familiar from other blues, R&B, and jump blues compositions. The differences lie in Kane's lyrics and in her enthusiasm in singing them. The former adult film star stakes out a pan-sexual stance that she expounds lustily. Jack Tempchin's "Who Do You Love?" finds her endorsing homosexuality, a manage ? trois, and prostitution, and assuring her listeners that God does, too. Her own "(Hey Mister!) She Was My Baby Last Night" portrays an unexpected combination in a romantic triangle. In "For Your Love," Kane lists a series of sexual fantasy characters ranging from "a dominatrix with a whip up above" to "a White House intern." And "Let's Commit Adultery" states its position in its title. The backing band, which occasionally features Dave Alvin and Marcia Ball, is excellent, but the distinctive element in the mix is Kane's lusty persona.

Candye Kane - Swango [1998]

Candye Kane's sole major-label release, 1998's Swango, isn't one of her best albums. Producer Mike Vernon (who had run the famous U.K. blues-rock label Blue Horizon in the '60s) uses the then-current swing revival to reduce the more authentic jump blues elements of Kane's earlier records. The result is a kind of hipsterrific cocktail-nation cloyingness that makes Kane seem like a novelty act. Kane is singing better than ever, especially on the opening statement of intent, "200 Pounds of Fun," and a terrific version of the standard "Dream a Little Dream of Me," and her songwriting is growing increasingly sharper as well. The title track's a particular gem. (Longtime fans will be disappointed to find, however, that this is by far Kane's least-bawdy record.) So really, the fault comes down to the stiff arrangements and inappropriate production; look past those and Swango is an appealing, entertaining record. It may take a few listens to get to that point, however.

Candye Kane - Home Coockin' [1994]

After releasing her own cassette (the partially live Burlesque Swing -- the best introduction to Candye's unique talents), this stew may be a case of too many cooks. And despite a star-studded cast -- including two Paladins and one member of Los Lobos (who are also listed among the six producers -- not counting Kane), R&B guitar great Roy Gaines, Blaster Dave Alvin, Fab T-Bird Kim Wilson -- the result is neither fish nor fowl. The hardcore blues numbers -- "Big Mama Candye's Blues" and "Don't Blame It on Me" (a duet with Wilson) -- are fairly standard fare, and her ribald side is virtually absent, but the conjunto "She Wore a Red Carnation" and country two-step "Dance Hall Girls" show Candye's singing and songwriting to their best advantage. (Her Antone's follow-up, 1995's Knockout, is far from a "blues album" -- with country and rock material penned by Dylan, Jack Tempchin, Rickie Lee Jones, Van Dyke Parks, and Lowell George -- but features better vocal performances by Candye and production by Val Garay.)

Nouvelle Vague - New Wave [2007]

Release Date: Jun 5, 2007
Recording Date: Dec 1980-1982
With this set of cover songs by new wave artists and the film music covers collection Coming Home, Nouvelle Vague's Marc Collin and DJ Gilles LeGuen move beyond the bossa nova-meets-post-punk concept of Nouvelle Vague's first two albums. Nouvelle Vague's ability to find just the right songs shines through on all of their releases -- even when their interpretations of the songs falls a bit short -- so it makes sense that the simply named New Wave is worth hearing. That these tracks are also reinterpretations is a clever nod to the group's origins, but it never feels too contrived. The mix of popular and obscure artists on New Wave shows how good Nouvelle Vague have become at being curators: mixing Devo's famously mechanical take on "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," Gary Numan's icy "On Broadway," and Nico's imperious version of "Heroes" with Polyphonic Size's "Mother's Little Helper" -- which rivals the Normal's "Warm Leatherette" for the title of new wave's frostiest song -- and Karel Fialka's almost comically doomy "People Are Strange" makes for just the right mix of familiarity and discovery. Telex's vocoder-riffic "Dance to the Music" and the Slits' breathless, intense "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" are some of the other standouts from a collection that manages to put a fresh twist on new wave compilations.

Neil Young.Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968

Release Date: Dec 2, 2008
Recording Date: Oct 9, 1968-Oct 10, 1968
Sugar Mountain: Live at Canterbury House 1968 the third installment from Neil Young's Archives although through some weird filing system this is Vol. 00, possibly because this dates before either of the previously released volumes in Archives Performance Series culls highlights from Neil Young's two shows at Canterbury House in Ann Arbor, MI on November 9 and 10, 1968. Like its two predecessors in the Archives series, the concerts captured on Sugar Mountain are legendary among Neil Young collectors, in this case because of the gentle, tentative version of the title track that showed up on Decade prior to this, the only official release from the concert. At first glance, Sugar Mountain might seem similar to Live at Massey Hall 1971, as they're both solo acoustic sets, but the tenor of the two shows is quite different. Massey Hall captured Neil in full flight, just before the release of Harvest, whereas the concerts on Sugar Mountain were just a month or two shy of the release of his first solo album. He had hits with Buffalo Springfield much of the set list leans heavily on Springfield songs, such as "Mr. Soul," "Expecting to Fly," "Birds," "Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing," and "Broken Arrow" but he had yet to prove himself as a solo artist, so the endearing tentative quality of his performances shouldn't come as a surprise, and yet it does: Young's reputation as a steely renegade often suggests that he never second-guesses his moves. Neil doesn't second-guess here but he is fragile and human, telling stories (sometimes at considerable length) before sliding into these delicate songs, wryly lamenting that he should have some happy songs to sing before testing out the melody for "Winterlong," stopping short because the song isn't quite written yet. It's a marvelously intimate performance, unguarded and open-hearted, unique in its delicate touch: it's Neil Young before the myth crystallized, and listening to it anew, it's easy to fall in love with him all over again.
