Jackie DeShannon - Me About You [1968]

Jackie DeShannon's Me About You album contains four originals, two co-written with producer Jack Nitzsche, and interpretations of material by such diverse songwriters as Holland-Dozier-Holland, Jimmy Webb, Carole Bayer Sager, Tim Hardin, two from the team of Gary Bonner and Alan Gordon, Van Dyke Parks, the Lovin' Spoonful's John Sebastian, and others. It's quite a crew, and the 13 songs make for a satisfying collection displaying both sides of DeShannon, the songwriter and the singer. As Harriet Schock was inspired by the film All About Eve for her American Romance album, DeShannon seems enamored of the 1961 Natalie Woods film which was Warren Beatty's debut. Her "Splendor in the Grass" should have been considered for the 1981 made-for-TV remake; it has a grand presentation, the originals holding up the serious side of the album. But for fans of her 1965 hit "What the World Needs Now Is Love," the songs that have that Top 40 flair are the Motown chestnut "I'll Turn to Stone" and an exquisite reading of John Sebastian's "Didn't Want to Have to Do It," which really should have made the songwriter proud. The tune would have been nice on New Arrangement, the singer's Columbia recording released in a time when adult contemporary ruled for Kenny Rogers, Olivia Newton-John, and, of course, Kim Carnes. Turtles/Helen Reddy/Earth, Wind & Fire producer Joseph Wissert must've brought the Alan Gordon/Gary Bonner material in, those two having written "Happy Together" along with other songs for Gary Lewis, Three Dog Night, and Lesley Gore. Their "I'm With You" is good sandwiched in between Jack and Jackie's (that is, Nitzsche and DeShannon, not to be confused with the president and the first lady) "I Keep Wanting You" and title track "Me About You." The originals have an edge over this particular Gary Bonner/Alan Gordon song, but what the album does display is a unique snapshot of a variety of 1960s songwriters, big production, and Jackie DeShannon's distinctive voice. Me About You comes in "...visual sound Stereo," whatever that was, and is a strong album for fans of the veteran performer Tim Hardin's "Baby Close Its Eyes," a lullaby that would have been perfect for Linda Ronstadt's 1996 collection (a duet with DeShannon would have been really nice). But the real gem here is "I'll Turn to Stone," which brings lightheartedness to an album that seems held back by serious tones, and the singer seems to be having the most fun when she's rocking out.

The Doors - Live At The Matrix 1967 [2008]

Just weeks before their second single, “Light My Fire,” began its ascent to the top of the charts, The Doors played a two-night stand at The Matrix, a small San Francisco nightclub owned by the Jefferson Airplane's Marty Balin. The 2-CD set LIVE AT THE MATRIX, the latest in the acclaimed series of previously unreleased Doors concerts from Rhino and Bright Midnight Archives, presents over two hours of music from these fabled performances, recorded on March 7 and 10, 1967,

Jean Knight & Barbara Lynn - Blue Soul Belles, Vol. 2

Release Date: Feb 8, 2000
Westside Records' second volume of the Blue Soul Belles series pairs Jean Knight and Barbara Lynn, a statuesque singer/guitarist from New Orleans, on 33 songs culled from Jet Stream and Tribe Records with Knight performing 19 numbers and Lynn 14. Both singers have that one big hit in common: Knight's "Mr. Big Stuff," not included but referenced on "(T'Aint It) The Truth"; ironically, Lynn's biggest hit, "You'll Lose a Good Thing," is included, but by Knight, not Lynn. Each also enjoyed a handful of smaller regional and local hits. Lynn, an accomplished songwriter, wrote much of what she sang, including three soulful up-tempo jams for the feet: "Club a Go-Go," "Movin' on a Groove," and "Disco Music." But it's the Southern/bayou blues numbers that make Lynn special (i.e., the aching "Until Then I'll Suffer"). And she sings plenty of those on this 33-song smorgasbord. Knight's song choices will please the most demanding Southern soul fan. She comes hard and real on "A Tear," "Please, Please, Please," and other tough selections like "Doggin' Me Around." The disc is more representative of Lynn's hits (though none of her Jamie sides are included) than Knight's; Knight's Stax recordings are not included and her take of "You Left the Water Running" is disappointing compared to others. But overall this is a fine collection of feminine Southern soul from two of its most persistent purveyors.

Dee Dee Warwick - I Want to Be With You: The Mercury/Blue Rock Sessions

Release Date: Jun 5, 2001
It wasn't for lack of talent that Dee Dee Warwick never approached the mainstream superstardom of her more famous older sister. As a sort of companion to She Didn't Know: The Atco Sessions, this generous 26-track collection compiles everything she recorded for the titular label from 1965-1969, with two tracks from a later 1973 session. The younger Warwick's rawer approach was closer to Aretha's but, when she slides into the high notes, the similarities to sister Dionne are obvious. Although revered by soul authorities as a great talent, when listening to these tracks it's easy to hear why she never clicked with the general public. For all her obvious vocal talents, there aren't enough great songs that draw attention to her fabulous gospel-driven voice. Additionally, like Dusty Springfield, her best assets are often buried behind a fussy and overbearing production that does neither her, nor these tunes, any favors. Ranging from pop-soul to R&B, the various producers add strings, backing vocals, horns, and at times everything short of Phil Spector in an effort to bolster some of these weak songs, but the results generally don't justify the effort. Even the great Philadelphia team of Gamble & Huff can't create sparks on the few tracks they are involved with. That said, there are enough gems scattered throughout to justify this disc's existence, especially since it marks the first CD appearance of many of these heretofore rare songs. Warwick lays into the bluesy "That's Not Love" like Etta James, causing distortion as she hauls off and wails with soul-searing power. The obscure Goffin & King tune "Yours Until Tomorrow," best-known from Gene Pitney's version, is a should-have-been hit, as is the original version of "I'm Gonna Make You Love Me," later a smash when the Temptations and the Supremes took it to the charts. Ultimately, Warwick was a substantial talent who didn't find her niche, or land songwriters of the Bacharach/David stature to guide her. This worthy collection -- predominantly taken from the original masters but still sounding thin and sometimes shrill -- is an important historical item for die-hard '60s soul fans, but disappointing for the casual listener.

Otis Redding - Live in London and Paris

Release Date: Sep 23, 2008
Recording Date: Mar 17, 1967,Mar 21, 1967
When the Love Generation (which, truthfully, did no better with that emotion than any other generation) got its first real glimpse of soul giant Otis Redding at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 backed by Booker T. & the MG's, a powerhouse band if there ever were one, they saw love with a capital L, because Redding sang love songs like the world was about to end, wringing the emotion out of them like a soulful, urgent hurricane. He was, simply put, an unstoppable force on-stage, taking all the energy of gospel and upping the ante until it seemed like the very sky itself was about to fly off into space from the very power of it. Redding was soul, and soul in every fiber of his being. The two sets included here, which predate the Monterey performance by a couple of months, were recorded in London (March 17) and Paris (March 21) on the Stax/Volt package tour of Europe in 1967, and they just might be even more astounding (particularly the Paris night) than the Monterey set. Working again with the MG's, with the horns of the Mar-Keys along for extra kick, Redding burns the house down in both of these sets, wringing every last bit of energy out of Sam Cooke's "Shake" until it seems the universe is about to come off its hinges, turning "Try a Little Tenderness" into a silken caress, making "I've Been Loving You Too Long" into an anthem for the hopeless arc of love, and taking "Day Tripper" to places the Beatles could only dream about, all with the MG's and the Mar-Keys churning behind him like a huge, funky turbine. This was Stax soul in all its ragged, vital glory. The original tapes of these sets (Atlantic issued an LP of the London show in 1967) have been reassembled and restored for this release, and the end result is a stunning reminder of what a giant Redding was. You want to know about love? Drop this in your player.

Jimi Hendrix & The Isley Brothers - In the Beginning

These are the first offerings from the Isley Brothers' T-Neck record label, and many consider special because Jimi Hendrix played lead guitar on them. However, these tracks bombed as singles. "Testify" is noisy and congested, too much is going on. Hendrix's guitar is prominent, and identifies him as conclusively as a DNA sample. The Isleys imitate popular singers Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and James Brown on "Testify," but the imitations are weak and sound like clones of each other. "Move Over and Let Me Dance" has some of "Testify"'s problems but works a little better, it has a danceable groove and a much better hook. The only soft selection is "The Last Girl," which has an airy sound, and features a rare laid-back vocal from Ron Isley during this phase of his career. Hendrix fans will love this, but fans of the Isleys' later stuff will not be impressed.

Curtis Mayfield - We Come in Peace With a Message of Love / Take it to the Streets

We Come in Peace, With a Message of Love, as the album's full title reads, was Curtis Mayfield's first studio album in three years when it was released in 1985. Assembled from tracks cut and written over as much as a decade apart, it included a complete re-recording and musical reconsideration of "We Gotta Have Peace" from the Roots album, and one song ("Bodyguard") recorded for the Heartbeat album six years before this. The latter is a disco-style track, but it's been remixed here from its original heavy beat, and fits in with the rest of the post-disco sound. "Breakin' In the Streets" is the most unexpected track here, an almost reggae-style number with a great sax solo by Hank Ford. The emphasis here, however, is on lyricism rather than the beat, important as the latter is -- "Everybody Needs a Friend" (which features a smooth and lyrical solo by Ford) is the stylistic centerpiece of the album, a hauntingly beautiful, lyrical piece of music with a stunning chorus. The slow ballad "This Love Is True" and the catchy, anthem-like "We Gotta Have Peace," which finished out the original LP's second side, are part of this same core, with substantial lyrics and messages that put Mayfield completely in his element as a singer and songwriter. Take It To The Streets (1990) was Curtis Mayfield's first new studio album in five years-during that time, following the commercial disappointment of We Come In Peace, Mayfield had toured Europe (where his popularity never faltered) twice and appeared extensively on British television. So this was to be his comeback to the arena of creative, as opposed to re-creative musicianship, but his accident and paralysis in August of 1990 tragically cut short the process. The album itself is a winner, a lively, bracing, topical work embracing in-your-face politics ("Homeless"), Mayfield's old, achingly lyrical Impressions-era balladry ("Do Be Down"), dance numbers ("Who Was That Lady"), and even a flashback or two to his early '70s glory days ("Superfly" etc.) with "He's a Fly Guy," written for the blaxploitation movie parody I'm Gonna Git U Sucka -- but all of it wrapped around Mayfield's meld of sophisticated musicianship and heartfelt lyrics. The sound is leaner than his earlier works, and a lot more electronic in nature, in terms of the keyboard work and the solo instruments. The remastering of these two albums, from the 1980s and '90s, is flawless, not surprisingly given their recent vintage.

Jefferson Airplane - Surrealistic Pillow [Mono/Stereo]

RCA 66598-2
24 Karat Gold Disc (mono/stereo)
Original LP release: 1967
CD release: 1995
Recording Date: Oct 31, 1966-Nov 22, 1966
The second album by Jefferson Airplane, Surrealistic Pillow was a groundbreaking piece of folk-rock-based psychedelia, and it hit like a shot heard round the world. From the Top Ten singles "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love" to the sublime "Embryonic Journey," the sensibilities are fierce, the material is both melodic and complex, and the performances, sparked by new member Grace Slick on most of the lead vocals, are inspired, helped along by Jerry Garcia (serving as spiritual and musical advisor and sometimes guitarist). Every song is perfect, and the only pity is that RCA didn't record for official release any of the group's shows from this era, when this material made up the bulk of their repertory; though they later claimed that the record wasn't representative of the group's sound, Jefferson Airplane did wonderful things with these songs on-stage. The songwriting was spread around between Marty Balin, Slick, Paul Kantner, and Jorma Kaukonen, and Slick and Balin (who never had a prettier song than "Today," which he'd actually written for Tony Bennett) shared the vocals; and the whole album was resplendent in a happy balance of all of these creative elements, before excessive experimentation (musical and chemical) began affecting the band's ability to do a straightforward song. The group never made a better album, and few artists from the era ever did. [In 2001, a new remastering of the album appeared, initially as part of the four-CD set Ignition. This version came out as a single CD in late November of 2001 featuring both the stereo and mono mixes with extensive new annotation by Jefferson Airplane biographer Jeff Tamarkin.]

Solomon Burke - Live At The House Of Blues

Recording Date: Jul 1, 1994
The big, brassy band that backs Solomon Burke on this live set enhances, but never overshadows, his powerful vocals and God-given charisma. Opening with "Everybody Needs Somebody to Love," he gets the crowd in a festive mood before slinking into a strong three-song medley comprising "If You Need Me"/"Tonight's the Night"/"I Almost Lost My Mind." He displays his preaching skills on "Cruel World," and you can almost see the collection plate being passed. "Candy/Candy Rap" begins with a big band arrangement, the sound is bold and brassy, but then lightens with Burke's "Candy Rap." He excels on "Got to Get You Off My Mind," another one of his hits from back-in-the-day. In fact, the only glaring omission from his King Solomon era is the bewitching "Somebody's Watching You." On the three or so blues tunes he does, if you close your eyes, you'll think it was a female singing, as he sings in a higher key on blues tunes. Burke, a true character, closes this enjoyable performance with Roy Brown's classic "Good Rockin' Tonight."

Solomon Burke - Soul Alive! [2 CD]

Release Date: Oct 8, 2002
For pure soul testifying, no one compares to Solomon Burke. He earned his title -- "King of Soul" -- by bringing the gospel fervor of the Southern preacher to his performances, and no recording proves his command over an audience quite like Soul Alive! Recorded in 1983 in Washington, D.C., the set proves Burke had lost little from his '60s heyday; he works through nearly all of his hits, spurring on the concert-goers as though they were the ones performing instead of him -- in fact, some of the women are heard screaming so often they should've been credited. Burke shines most when leading the faithful through "I Can't Stop Loving You," pausing for a lengthy monologue before reprising the song and leading into a devastating finish. Elsewhere he works through deeply felt country-blues-gospel fusions like "I Almost Lost My Mind," "Take Me (Just as I Am)," "He'll Have to Go," and "Down in the Valley." [Originally released by Rounder in 1985, Soul Alive! made a re-appearance in 2002, a double-disc edition including two shows from his stand at the Phoenix 1 club.]
