George Harrison - Best of Dark Horse 1976-1989

Best of Dark Horse 1976-1989 is George Harrison's second official compilation album and was released in 1989. It follows up on both his successful comeback album Cloud Nine in 1987 and the Harrison-led Traveling Wilburys Vol. 1 the following year, also a big seller.

Specially for this release, Harrison recorded two new songs, "Poor Little Girl" and "Cockamamie Business", while also including his Lethal Weapon 2 soundtrack song "Cheer Down" for good measure.

A fine summation of his period thus far on his own Dark Horse Records label, ranging from 1976's Thirty Three & 1/3 to Cloud Nine and beyond, Best of Dark Horse 1976-1989 surprisingly failed to chart in the UK and only made #132 in the US.

Best of Dark Horse 1976-1989, originally distributed through Warner Bros. Records, went out of print some years after its release, without being reissued by EMI when it acquired Harrison's entire Dark Horse catalogue. With no definitive career-spanning Harrison yet available, 1976's The Best of George Harrison is currently the only Harrison retrospective on offer.

Track list:

All songs by George Harrison, except where noted.

1. "Poor Little Girl" – 4:33
2. "Blow Away" – 3:59
3. "That's The Way It Goes" – 3:34

The Smiths - The Smiths

Release Date: Feb 1984
Arriving in an era dominated by synth pop and gloomy post-punk, the Smiths' eponymous debut was the bracing beginning of a new era. On the surface, the Smiths' sound wasn't radically different from traditional British guitar pop -- Johnny Marr's ringing, layered guitars were catchy and melodic -- but it was actually an astonishing subversion of the form, turning the structure inside out. Very few of the songs followed conventional verse-chorus structure, yet they were quite melodic within their own right. Marr's inventive songwriting was made all the more original and innovative by Morrissey's crooning and lyrics. Writing about unconventional topics, from homosexuality ("Hand in Glove") to child molestation and murder, Morrissey had a distinctively ironic, witty, and literate viewpoint whose strangeness was accentuated by his off-kilter voice, which would move from a croon to a yelp in a matter of seconds. While the production of The Smiths is a little pristine, the songs are vital and alive, developing a new, unique voice within pop music. Though the Smiths continued to improve over the course of their career, their debut remains startling and exciting.

Track list:

1 Reel Around the Fountain
2 You've Got Everything Now
3 Miserable Lie
4 Pretty Girls Make Graves
5 The Hand That Rocks the Cradle

The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

Release Date: Jun 1986
Meat Is Murder may have been a holding pattern, but The Queen Is Dead is the Smiths' great leap forward, taking the band to new musical and lyrical heights. Opening with the storming title track, The Queen Is Dead is a harder-rocking record than anything the Smiths had attempted before, but that's only on a relative scale -- although the backbeat is more pronounced, the group certainly doesn't rock in a conventional sense. Instead, Johnny Marr has created a dense web of guitars, alternating from the minor-key rush of "Bigmouth Strikes Again" and the faux rockabilly of "Vicar in a Tutu" to the bouncy acoustic pop of "Cemetry Gates" and "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side," as well as the lovely melancholy of "I Know It's Over" and "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out." And the rich musical bed provides Morrissey with the support for his finest set of lyrics. Shattering the myth that he is a self-pitying sap, Morrissey delivers a devastating set of clever, witty satires of British social mores, intellectualism, class, and even himself. He also crafts some of his finest, most affecting songs, particularly in the wistful "The Boy With the Thorn in His Side" and the epic "There Is a Light That Never Goes Out," two masterpieces that provide the foundation for a remarkable album.

Track list:

1 The Queen Is Dead (Take Me Back to Dear Old Blighty)
2 Frankly, Mr. Shankly
3 I Know It's Over
4 Never Had No One Ever
5 Cemetry Gates
6 Bigmouth Strikes Again

The B-52's - The B-52's (1.st album)

Even in the weird, quirky world of new wave and post-punk in the late '70s, the B-52's' eponymous debut stood out as an original. Unabashed kitsch mavens at a time when their peers were either vulgar or stylish, the Athens quintet celebrated all the silliest aspects of pre-Beatles pop culture -- bad hairdos, sci-fi nightmares, dance crazes, pastels, and anything else that sprung into their minds -- to a skewed fusion of pop, surf, avant-garde, amateurish punk, and white funk. On paper, it sounds like a cerebral exercise, but it played like a party. The jerky, angular funk was irresistibly danceable, winning over listeners dubious of Kate Pierson and Cindy Wilson's high-pitched, shrill close harmonies and Fred Schneider's campy, flamboyant vocalizing, pitched halfway between singing and speaking. It's all great fun, but it wouldn't have resonated throughout the years if the group hadn't written such incredibly infectious, memorable tunes as "Planet Claire," "Dance This Mess Around," and, of course, their signature tune, "Rock Lobster." These songs illustrated that the B-52's' adoration of camp culture wasn't simply affectation -- it was a world view capable of turning out brilliant pop singles and, in turn, influencing mainstream pop culture. It's difficult to imagine the endless kitschy retro fads of the '80s and '90s without the B-52's pointing the way, but The B-52's isn't simply an historic artifact -- it's a hell of a good time.

The Crystal Method - Vegas

When Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland started distributing homemade singles around Los Angeles at the beginning of the '90s, their bass-fortified, hard-rolling techno concoctions perked up the ears of industry impresarios and local scenesters alike. Vegas, their affectionately-titled major label debut, refines the formula. Thick with layers of pounding beats and rock dynamics, it takes the typical club fare and beefs it up with a uniquely western slant. The detectable influences range from the power chords of AC/DC to old school hip-hop patterns to the smooth melodies of Stevie Wonder. On blistering tracks like "Trip Like I Do" and "Keep Hope Alive," the Crystal Method confirm that America has become a force of contention in the electronica field

Lamb - Fear of Fours [1999]

Three years elapsed between the U.K. release of Lamb's highly acclaimed debut and this CD, making fans of their moody trip-hop impatient. Does Fear of Fours deliver? Yes, but like many sophomore efforts, this one can't help but fall short of expectations. There is more of Lamb's full, emotional sound here, but while songs off the debut such as "Gorecki" and "Cottonwool" were beyond epic, most of the tracks on Fear of Fours merely get the job done. Where Louise Rhodes's vocals were near operatic, they are now more spoken wordish. And rather than complementing the lush orchestral instrumentation of partner Andy Barlow, the two more often collide. But there is beauty in chaos and nobody knows that better than Lamb. When Fear of Fours shines, it really shines. Take the drum & bass-influenced beat frenzy on "Ear Parcel" and the uplifting aria, "Fly." These alone are a testament to why so many fell for this Manchester duo in the first place.

Basement Jaxx - Rooty

Since Simon Radcliffe and Felix Burton of Basement Jaxx released the unbelievable Remedy in 1999, house music has experienced a slight identity crisis. But even as trance and Fatboy Slim-style big beat saturate the dance floor, the primal, funky soul of true house that the Jaxx duo know and love clearly reverberates beneath it all. With Rooty, Radcliffe and Burton finish the job they started on Remedy by listening to their instincts, stripping away the gloss, taking some creative risks, and coming up with some of the rawest grooves in recent memory. The first track and single "Romeo" doesn't waste any time, parlaying an irresistible hook and a relentlessly up vibe into the most danceable three and a half minutes of 2001. Frankie Knuckles-era Chicago house and War's deep Latin funk are audible throughout, along with an adventurous production sense; "SFM" packs in a wild kaleidoscope of howls and cross-rhythms while slinking along and rubbing itself on the furniture like a cat in heat. Still, given the level of creative license at work here, the record sometimes misses the mark. Songs like "I Want U" reach for progressive funk, but forget the low bass end that can give a silly, airy song some gravity. But more often that not, the band's decision to eschew beats in favor of dirtier, sexier means of rhythmic expressions pays off. Witness the fat bass line at work in "Get Me Off," as a breathy tease of a lead vocal turns into an outright come-on. Somehow both relentlessly modern and a throwback to simpler, funkier times, Rooty is an effective way to jog the memory should you have forgotten the egg that came before the trance chicken

ABBA - Thank You For The Music [4CD BOX-SET]

Release Date: Apr 18, 1995
Recording Date: Mar 29, 1972-Aug 4, 1982
Released in Europe in October 1994 and in the U.S. six months later, Thank You for the Music is the ABBA box set retrospective, tracing their ten years of record-making, 1972-1982, including 52 previously released tracks on the first three discs, plus a fourth disc of rarities. Listening to all the singles, plus scattered album tracks and B-sides, provides a clear picture of the group's development. Early on, there is considerable stylistic experimentation, as these pop dabblers ape everything from Phil Spector's Wall of Sound rock to big-band swing. But after "Dancing Queen," they find their niche in disco, and the second disc is loaded with hit songs anchored to the familiar bass-heavy walking beat and swooping synths-meant-to-sound-like-strings that defined that most '70s genres. On the third disc, covering their last years, ABBA returns to the more propulsive pop/rock of early classics like "SOS" and "Mamma Mia," revving up the tempo in acknowledgment of the arrival of new wave. Wracked by romantic discord, they also achieve somewhat more meaningful lyrics before calling it a day. In the album's liner notes, the bandmembers register mild protest at the inclusion of unreleased material on the fourth disc -- what they finished and liked, they released, they note. Fair warning. Most prominent in a collection of alternate takes, miscellaneous B-sides, foreign-language recordings, and TV soundtracks is the 23-and-a-half-minute "ABBA Undeleted," a medley of 15 song fragments and Swedish studio chatter that suggests ABBA had a few more hits in them if they had found the time to finish them off. Nevertheless, this remains fan-only material.

You Say Party! We Say Die! - Lose All Time

Providing more of the same as their debut album in the best possible sense, Lose All Time cements British Columbia's You Say Party! We Say Die! as one of the most consistently enjoyable acts of the neo-new wave, even despite their terrible name. With their combination of Becky Ninkovic's yowling, bratty lead vocals and Krista Loewen's unapologetically cheesy keyboards, the majority of Lose All Time passes by in a blur of thumping dance-rock tunes highly indebted to the twin towers of the Athens, GA, new wave set, Pylon and the B-52's. However, the haunting piano-and-voice ballad "You're Almost There" provides an effective breather amidst all the nervy dancefloor fillers, and the closing "Quiet World" has a hypnotic pulse akin to the best work of the often underrated Martha & the Muffins. A more consistent and thoughtful release than 2006's Hit the Floor!, which got over in part because of the band's infectious sense of fun and enthusiasm, Lose All Time is a genuinely terrific album showing that You Say Party! We Say Die! may be one of the few bands in the retro-new wave scene with the talent to last beyond their pop cultural moment.

The Go! Team - Ladyflash [single]

The Go Team's 'LadyFlash' is one of those tunes that comes along and grabs you by the balls and swings you around and around until you are sick and dizzy. A big party hit. This is the kind of thing the Noonday Underground were doing until the untimely arrival of Paul Weller. It's such a great tune, that if there was any justice in the world would be top of the charts next week. Already used to death on Radio 5 and probably coming to hundreds of 'feel good' adverts next summer - 'Bank with us/drink our beer and life will be a crazy uplifting bundle of joy'. Hot Chip remix not up to much but its not an easy track to improve upon.

Elvis - Live in Las Vegas (4CD Box Set)

When Elvis Presley played Las Vegas between 1969 and '76, many rock & rollers screamed sellout. Today, every rock act plays Vegas. When Elvis came to town, it was the event. RCA--still uncovering unreleased stuff decades after the King's death--celebrates his Vegas legacy with two complete, previously unreleased shows from '69 and '70; a CD of previously released material from '70 (much of it taken from the classic Elvis Onstage, February 1970 album); and a fourth CD of mostly rarities from '74 and '75. The latter also includes a show from his disastrous '56 Vegas debut. Elvis began moving in a more mainstream direction in Vegas, and some may complain that the two unreleased shows are very similar to several other released shows from the same period. But, at least early on, the boy could still rock when he wanted and break hearts with a ballad. And the "new" 1970 show includes what may be the best live version of "Suspicious Minds" available. Besides, planeloads of fans from Japan and Europe flew to Nevada just to see as many of these shows as they could in a week--two a night for $15, which included dinner or two drinks! Redundancy was never an issue

The Stone Roses - Sally Cinnamon

"Sally Cinnamon" is a non-album single released by the band the Stone Roses in 1987.

The song is the second single to be releasd by The Stone Roses, and was actually released before Mani joined the band.

The song itself seems to be an ode to 'Sally' and describes her with the use of cliches, such as 'Sugar and Spice'. However, their are contrasting ideas as to the final verse. One belief is that the song is about a girl that Ian is infactuacted with and a) can't have her as she is in a relationship with another female or b) that 'her' is a female relative, possibly daugter, sister or mother. It is most commonly percieved, however, that the song was written by Ian after reading a letter directed to 'Sally'.

It is the first single by the Stone Roses to feature their classic sound. Although pre-Mani, the melodies and choral refrain are in the same vein of the those recorded with the classic line-up.

Sally Cinnamon is often believed to be same Sally in the Oasis song "Don't Look Back in Anger". Noel Gallagher collaborated with Ian Brown on his solo album with the song "Keep What Ya Got". Noel Gallagher has said that Lyla from the Oasis song of the same name is the sister of Sally. However, in a documetary filmed for the release of "Stop the Clocks", Noel has admitted that a fan came up and asked him if Sally was the Sally Cinnamon, and was annoyed he didn't think of it first. "I might nick that" Noel was then quoted as saying.

A banner featuring lyrics from Sally Cinnamon hangs in the Stretford End at Manchester United's Old Trafford ground on match days. It reads: "Sent to me from heaven... you are my world" and features images of United legends like Eric Cantona and George Best. The song itself is also traditionally played during the pre-match build up at Old Trafford, whilst the team enter the pitch to Stone Roses song 'This Is The One'.

When The Stone Roses started to become popular in 1989, their former label FM Revolver re-released the single and had made a video for the song which The Stone Roses found so "patronising" that they trashed the offices of their former label with paint, splattered paint over former manager Paul Birch and his wife, and threw a rock through the window of his car. The band were taken to court and were fined £3,600 each and were banned from entering the premises of their former label. The incident saw the single chart at No.75 at the start of 1990 and then rise to No.46 two weeks later.

2. Sally Cinnamon (12" Single Mix)

The Rolling Stones - The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus

The most interesting archival release of the Rolling Stones since More Hot Rocks, 20 years ago, and the first issue of truly unreleased material by the Stones from this period. And the Stones have some competition from the Who, Taj Mahal, and John Lennon on the same release. FILMED AND RECORDED ON DECEMBER 10-11, 1968, at a North London studio, Rock and Roll Circus has been, as much as the Beach Boys' Smile, "the one that got away" for most '60s music enthusiasts. The Jethro Tull sequence is the standard studio track, but the rest -- except for the Stones' "Salt of the Earth" -- is really live. The Who's portion has been out before, courtesy of various documentaries, but Taj Mahal playing some loud electric blues is new and great, the live Lennon rendition of "Yer Blues" is indispensable, and the Stones' set fills in lots of blanks in their history -- "Jumpin' Jack Flash" in one of two live renditions it ever got with Brian Jones in the lineup, "Sympathy for the Devil" in an intense run-through, "Parachute Woman" as a lost live vehicle for the band, "You Can't Always Get What You Want" as a show-stopping rocker even without its extended ending (no Paul Buckmaster choir), and "No Expectations" as their first piece of great live blues since "Little Red Rooster." IT'S A MUST-OWN, PERIOD.

Track list:

01.Mick Jagger's Introduction Of Rock And Roll Circus
02.Entry Of The Gladiators
03.Mick Jagger's Introduction Of Jethro Tull
04.Song For Jeffrey (Jethro Tull)
05.Keith Richard's Introduction Of The Who

!!! (chk chk chk) - Myth Takes

Of all the dance-punk revivalists, !!! has been the most consistently interesting and challenging, not to mention the group most likely to fill the dancefloor on indie rock night. While their previous album, the political and righteous Louden Up Now, was good enough to vault them to the level of the bands that inspired them (Gang of Four, the Pop Group, Liquid Liquid), Myth Takes firmly establishes them there. It's a different fire that burns here for !!!, mostly setting aside political concerns for fiery dancefloor rave-ups. The band sounds inspired, like they are plugged directly into a wall socket. The first three tracks are like opening a door and being blasted backward by a wall of flame and heat. Nic Offer's vocal chants, asides, and strung-together proclamations are more frantic than ever, and when he turns it down a notch, he sounds nearly sexy (as on "Must Be the Moon," a desperate story of sex and lust in the city). He has to be a live wire of energy to keep up with the band, which burns brightly and plays like they have something to prove from beginning to end. This is especially true of Justin van der Volgen, whose bass work underpins the freewheeling walls of chik-ing guitars with a fluid and funky bottom. His production is a masterwork, balancing and blending a kaleidoscope of guitars, drums, percussion, keys, and vocals. The record could have easily sounded like a mess, but he makes it sound alive and raw. When !!! finally slows things down after that initial burst, they do some interesting things -- "Heart of Hearts" is a dancefloor filler that manages to sound menacing and rubbery at the same time, "Break in Case of Anything" is a kitchen-sink funk epic that has elements of disco, dub, hip-hop, and a killer horn section, and "Yadnus" is a fun mash-up of glitter drumbeats, tough-guy vocals, chicken-scratch guitars, and sweeping synths. The only tracks that let the side down a bit are the slightly generic "Bend Over Beethoven," which sounds like something they could have come up with in their sleep, and the ballad that ends the album, "Infiniford." On that last song, Offer's vocals don't suit the somber mood very well, and it's a down note to end such a wild ride of an album. These stumbles aside, Myth Takes is a thrilling success. Not too many bands even in heyday of the initial wave of dance-punk released records as full of energy, intelligence, and ferocious funk as this.

Track list;

1. Myth Takes
2. All My Heroes Are Weirdos
3. Must Be The Moon
4. New Name
5. Heart Of Hearts
6. Sweet Life

Oasis - (What's the Story) Morning Glory? Singles Box Set

Release Date: Dec 6, 1996
Many of the songs on Oasis' second album, (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, illustrated that Noel Gallagher's songwriting skills had deepened considerably, but the depth of his talent becomes evident when the B-sides of the album's singles are also considered. Almost every song from those four singles -- which Creation conveniently packaged in one box set in the wake of Morning Glory's success -- is at least the equal of what was on the actual album, and several are actually far better than a few songs on the official record. The three flip sides for Some Might Say all were worthy of inclusion on the album. "Acquiesce," which Oasis used as the opener on their 1996 tour, is an astonishing hard rocker, where Liam and Noel trade the verse and chorus in a song about their notorious love-hate relationship. The throttling "Headshrinker" is fine, but "Talk Tonight" is the other gem, a spare Noel showcase that finds him disarmingly letting down his emotional guard. The two keepers from Roll With It are a little less assuming, but the rolling acoustics of "It's Better People" are charming, and "Rockin' Chair," with its haunting melody and Liam's nuanced vocal, is an overlooked gem. While the full-length instrumental "The Swamp Song" on Wonderwall is a bit tedious, "Round Are Way" is fantastic, sounding like Definitely Maybe crossed with Madness, and the string-drenched "The Master Plan" is as effective an epic as "Champagne Supernova." Oasis begin to run out of steam on Don't Look Back in Anger, resorting to a cover of Slade's "Cum on Feel the Noize" to round out the three B-sides. While that is actually heavier than Quiet Riot's hit cover, the hyperactive "Step Out" -- which was pulled from Morning Glory at the last minute -- totally demolishes it, and the neo-psychedelic "Underneath the Sky" is a lovely change of pace. There's an album's worth of fresh material scattered throughout these singles, and it's no exaggeration to say that those songs form an album as good as (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, which makes you wish Noel showed a little more control in deciding what went on the album and what was reserved for the B-sides.

The Stone Roses - So Young EP

"So Young" is the debut single by The Stone Roses. A doom-laden affair, it was largely unsuccessful and was later disowned by the band. At this point Brown had yet to develop his trademark cool delivery and had a shouty, in-your-face style, and the rest of the band had not yet found the groove that was to characterise what is considered by many to be their best material. Some accounts state that it is a double 'A' side with "Tell Me".

Both songs appear on the Stone Roses un-official 1996 release Garage Flower. "So Young" was originally called "Misery Dictionary" but the Stone Roses changed the name of the song because they did not want people to think that they were influenced by The Smiths who had a song with a similar name, so they changed their song name to make it sound less morbid.

The front cover was achieved by John Squire smashing an old transistor radio and then glueing all the parts together.

Track list:

1. "So Young" (3:30)
2. "Tell Me" (3:50)

Neil Young - Hawks & Doves

Hawks & Doves is a 1980 album by Neil Young. Its two sides were recorded in different circumstance, side one being culled from sessions dating from approximately 1974 through 1977, and side two from sessions specifically for the album in early 1980. The record peaked at #30 on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart in December of 1980 in the United States. It is also one of Young's shortest albums, its running time just under half an hour.
Album information

Side one, the "doves" side, includes "Big Wing" and "The New Homestead", which were originally intended to be released as part of 1975's Homegrown. "The Old Homestead" presents a winding, oblique parable of Young's career, including reference to those who question Young's insistence on using the band Crazy Horse when more polished musicians are easily available. Since David Crosby has been on record many times with that very question, the song could be in answer to him directly, incidentally bearing resemblance to Crosby's song "Cowboy Movie" from his If I Could Only Remember My Name album of 1971, in that both present a lengthy allegorical story concealing allusion to the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young saga. In another resemblance, the song "Sailor Kennedy" bears similarities to a tune entitled "My Name Is John Johanna" as recorded by Kelly Harrell and the Virginia String Band in 1927, appearing as part of the "ballads" section of Harry Smith's famed Anthology of American Folk Music from 1952. This was intentional on Young's part, as the Anthology was part of the background hum on the folk circuit of Young's early days, influencing hundreds of folk and blues oriented performers in the 1950s and 1960s, both directly and indirectly.

Side two, the "hawks" side, consists of the recordings intended for the album, being the straightest country and western songs Young had penned to date, even more so than those found on American Stars 'N Bars or Comes a Time. Also, this side was unabashed patriotism and seeming promotion of right-wing values puzzled many critics and fans alike as it went against the public perception of the sixties folk-rocker who had written one of the most celebrated protest songs of the seventies, "Ohio." See the Robert Christgau link to the right for one take on this apparent conundrum.

As with many of Young's releases, critical reaction at the time was mixed.

Neil Young - Life

Life is a 1987 album by Neil Young & Crazy Horse.

The first three tracks all handle the topic of world politics, and ponder the role of the United States in the world. "Long Walk Home," for example, empathizes with troops under deployment overseas. Though in response to the foreign policy issues of the time (Beirut, Qaddafi), Young found new meaning in these songs in the context of the war on terror and the occupation of Iraq. During his "Freedom of Speech" tour in support of Living with War, Young posted videos of these three songs on his website, [1]. The "Mideast Vacation" and "Long Walk Home" videos were later released on the DVD included with the album Living with War: In the Beginning. The performances are from his 1986 tour with Crazy Horse and are labeled as being "From Neil Young Archives Volume 3," a highly anticipated but perennially unreleased series of box sets chronicling Young's career.

This was Young's last release on the Geffen label. The title and cover portray Young a prisoner of his own music. The number 5 is scratched into the wall of his jail cell - the very number of albums Young would release under Geffen Records.

Neil Young - American Stars 'N Bars

American Stars 'N Bars is a 1977 rock album by Neil Young, the most popular track being "Like a Hurricane". The album was produced by Neil Young and David Briggs with Tim Mulligan except "Star of Bethlehem" by Elliot Mazer. The album cover was designed by Young's friend, actor Dean Stockwell, and features Connie Moskos keeled over with a bottle of Canadian whiskey in her hand and an intoxicated Young with his face pressed against the glass floor.

According to writer William Ruhlmann, "Neil Young made a point of listing the recording dates of the songs on American Stars 'n Bars; the dates even appeared on the LP labels. They revealed that the songs had been cut at four different sessions dating back to 1974. But even without such documentation, it would have been easy to tell that the album was a stylistic hodgepodge, its first side consisting of country-tinged material featuring steel guitar and fiddle, plus backup vocals from Linda Ronstadt and the then-unknown Nicolette Larson, while the four songs on the second side varied from acoustic solo numbers like "Will to Love" to raging rockers such as "Like a Hurricane." "Will to Love" is a particularly spooky and ambitious piece, extending the romantic metaphor of a salmon swimming upstream across seven minutes. The album's centerpiece, however, is "Like a Hurricane," one of Young's classic hard rock songs and guitar workouts, and a perpetual concert favorite."

"Star of Bethlehem" was originally intended to be released as part of Homegrown, as was an earlier version of the song "Homegrown."

Neil Young - Re Ac Tor

Re-ac-tor is an album by Neil Young and Crazy Horse, released in 1981. The album married the electric guitar crunch of the late 70s Crazy Horse sound with early 80s New Wave rhythms. Critical reception to the album was generally poor except for the accolades accorded to the album closer "Shots." The album marked the first use by Neil Young of the Synclavier which would be featured heavily on several of his later albums such as Trans (1982) and Landing on Water (1986).

Personnel

* Neil Young – guitar, piano, vocal
* Frank Sampedro – guitar, stringman, vocal
* Billy Talbot – bass, vocal
* Ralph Molina – drums, percussion, vocal

[edit] Miscellanea

The album features the Serenity Prayer prayer in Latin on the back cover:

"Deus, dona mihi serenitatem accipere res quae non possum mutare, fortitudinem mutare res quae possum, atque sapientiam differentiam cognoscere."

The English translation is: "God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

The inclusion of this prayer is possibly a reaction to another son of Young's being born with cerebral palsy.

The Stone Roses - One Love EP

One Love is a non-album single by The Stone Roses. The single was released in the UK, U.S., Australia, Germany, Japan, Spain, and France, peaking at #4 in the Roses' home country of the UK, their highest charting single up until that time. "One Love" is also available on the 1992 compilation Turns Into Stone, and the 2002 release The Very Best of The Stone Roses.

The song has a decidedly mixed reputation among Roses fans, with some denouncing it for borrowing too much from the success of Fools Gold. Nevertheless, the song contains vivid biblical references prevalent throughout their catalogue.

The original artwork for the single was said to have formed a swastika. John Squire ripped it up and used the torn pieces for the cover. The band set fire to the ripped up artwork in the video for One Love.

Track list:

1. "One Love" (7:45)
2. "Something's Burning" (7:50)

Leonard Cohen - Dear Heather

Dear Heather is Leonard Cohen's eleventh studio album, released in 2004.

It shows a further departure from that of Ten New Songs, with more female lead singing and a marked increase in read poetry over sung lyrics, two of these being poems by other writers.

The album was set to appear under the title Old Ideas, but Cohen changed the title as he was assured it would mislead people to believe that it was a compilation or Best Of. Again, Cohen recorded it digitally in his and Sharon Robinson's home studios in Los Angeles, as he did with his previous album, Ten New Songs.

Track list:

All songs were written by Leonard Cohen, except where noted.

1. "Go No More A-Roving" (words by Lord Byron, poem "So, we'll go no more a roving") – 3:40
2. "Because Of" – 3:00
3. "The Letters" (Cohen, Sharon Robinson) – 4:44
4. "Undertow" – 4:20
5. "Morning Glory" – 3:28
6. "On That Day" (Cohen, Anjani Thomas) – 2:04
7. "Villanelle for Our Time" (words by F. R. Scott) – 5:55
8. "There for You" (Cohen, Robinson) – 4:36
9. "Dear Heather" – 3:41
10. "Nightingale" (Cohen, Thomas) – 2:27
11. "To a Teacher" – 2:32
12. "The Faith" (music based on a Quebec folk song, see "Un Canadien errant") – 4:17
13. "Tennessee Waltz" (Redd Steward, Pee Wee King, additional verse by Cohen) – 4:05

Tracks 1, 3 and 8 were produced by Sharon Robinson. Tracks 2, 4–5, 7, 9 and 11 were produced by Leanne Ungar. Track 6 was produced by Anjani Thomas. Track 10 was produced by Anjani Thomas and Ed Sanders. Track 12 was produced by Leanne Ungar and Henry Lewy. Track 13 was produced by Leonard Cohen in 1985.

Track notes

* "On That Day" is a song about the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York City.
* "Villanelle for Our Time" was recorded 6 May 1999, shortly after his return from Mount Baldy Zen Center.
* "The Faith" is an outtake from Recent Songs, re-mixed and with new vocals added (thus the production was co-credited to Henry Lewy and Leanne Ungar).
* The last track is a live performance of "Tennessee Waltz", recorded 9 July 1985 at the Montreux Jazz Festival. Admittedly, it was taken from the radio recording and cleaned up digitally.
* The track 'Nightingale' is dedicated to the late R&B singer Carl Anderson.

Diana Ross - I Love You

Iconic diva Diana Ross sleepwalks through a mishmash of seemingly randomly chosen love songs, all covers save for one new composition, adding nothing to them and forcing one to wonder just why she bothered. It's been standard music industry practice for years for artists to record (or for their labels to release compilations of) romantic tunes in time for Valentine's Day, and the January 2007 arrival of this set couldn't have been better timed as it also coincided with the release of the film version of Dreamgirls, based on the career of the Supremes. But Ross doesn't seize the moment: she puts little emotion or enthusiasm into her recitations here, and seems to have little familiarity with, or understanding of, the songs she and producers Peter Asher and Steve Tyrell have chosen for the album. Her vocals are largely nondescript and at times barely hint at the qualities that made her such a distinctive force for decades, and the arrangements and production are whitewashed and lacking in originality. The material is all over the place, including songs from the '50s to those of more recent vintage, from the Platters' "Only You" through Berlin's "Take My Breath Away," and from fellow Motown great Marvin Gaye's "I Want You" to the ubiquitous (and, at this point, plain annoying) "You Are So Beautiful." Ross takes Jackie Wilson's "To Be Loved" and bleeds the soul from it, and she drains the magic from the Drifters' classic "This Magic Moment." Harry Nilsson's "Remember" not only opens the album but closes it in a brief reprise version, but Ross seems unsure what to do with it either time. The Beatles' "I Will" might be an excellent cover choice in more sympathetic hands, but Ross sounds uncomfortable with its simplicity and quietness, while her reading of Burt Bacharach-Hal David's sultry masterpiece "The Look of Love" is embarrassingly lifeless, especially if compared with Dusty Springfield's definitive '60s version. Whoever came up with the idea of Ross covering the Spiral Starecase's 1969 hit "More Today Than Yesterday" at least gets a few points for digging a bit deeper into the covers well, but Ross puts no fire into the up-tempo/upbeat song. Interestingly, the one new track here (other than a piece from the current Broadway production of The Color Purple), the Fred White-penned ballad "I Love You (That's All That Really Matters)," makes the most of Ross' vocal capabilities and range, begging the question of why she didn't just record an album of new material custom-fitted to her talents.

1.Remember
2.More Today Than Yesterday
3.I Want You.
4.I Love You (That's All That Really Matters)

The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums EP

was the second single from The Stone Roses debut album. It was released in the UK, Japan, and Germany. The single was their first Top 40 hit, placing 36th on the UK Singles Chart in July 1989. A reissue in March 1990 improved by 2 places.

The single used a noticeably different mix of "She Bangs The Drums" to the album version. The hi-hat intro was omitted, and it featured a slightly heavier guitar sound and a marginally different backing vocal arrangement. This single version is the one most commonly used for compilations and radio play.

The CD and cassette singles were noted for their strong selection of B-sides: "Standing Here", "Mersey Paradise", and the backward playing track "Simone". It is noted for its fusion of pop, Indie rock, and acid house genres. Ian Brown wrote the lyrics, while John Squire was responsible for the chorus.

In May 2007, NME magazine placed "She Bangs The Drums" at number 12 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

Track list:

1. "She Bangs the Drums" (3:43)
2. "Mersey Paradise" (2:44)
3. "Standing Here" (5:05)

Jimi Hendrix - The Ultimate Experience

Surprisingly well chosen for a best-of assembled from the results of a fan poll, The Ultimate Experience brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and career-defining live shots on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the record does hang together as a listen. Its blend of Hendrix-the-rocker and Jimi-the-underrated-soul-man is suggestive, painting a picture of a multifaceted genius and transcending its plainly mercenary origins. In the end, its effect--like that of all Hendrix's best records--is to remind us of a Jimi very, very much alive.

1. All Along The Watchtower
2. Purple Haze
